Deinema/DeRoy have been looking for the northern feeling (referring to Amsterdam North). ‘Op zoek naar het Noordgevoel’ (‘Looking for the Northern Feeling’) can be viewed in the Van der Pek neigbourhood in Amsterdam North. A lot is happening in this district.

Newly built houses, the relocation of the film museum and the advent of the North-South line (a new Amsterdam metro line still under construction) give a new impulse to this old quarter, causing a lot of changes. Amsterdam North’s specific identity will disappear. They wanted to pay tribute to this northern feeling before it has disappeared. Deinema/DeRoy interviewed, filmed and photographed inhabitants and shopkeepers from the Van der Pek neighbourhood with the question, ‘What is the northern feeling?’ Thus, the policeman on the beat described the Northerner as a friendly bighead. Students of the Bredero College (a secondary school) wrote poems and writer Nelleke Zandwijk wrote a story about the northern feeling especially for the project. The house has been furnished with things and furniture given, made or loaned by the neighbourhood’s inhabitants. It is also possible to spend the night in ‘the northern feeling’.
A publication accompanying the project has been made, consisting of a dvd and a travel guide.
